What are Pick-to-Light warehouse operations and what does the concept of ergonomics mean when it comes to materials handling equipment?
Pick to light system works with a number of lights in each storage unit which help the worker to pick the right item as desired. When the worker reaches the right item which has to be picked up, a different light blinks, helping the worker to identify and pick the right item. If there are more than one type of items to be picked up, different types of lights blink up. The system uses lights, letters and symbols where system is more complex in nature. This system optimises the picking time and reduces the errors.
Ergonomics relates to the use of proper equipment, techniques and procedures to minimise the workplace injuries, particularly those caused by the bending, flexing, lifting or pulling the items during warehousing operations. An ergonomically managed warehouse operations leads to identification and elimination of the potentially dangerous practices and trains the workers to avoid workplace injuries through systematic approach.
