What does the term "action" mean when it comes to skeletal muscle contraction? Choose a muscle and provide an explanation of its action.
Actiion reers to the body movement due to the the contraction of skeletal muscle. The nervous system controls the action of the muscle. During contraction a bone which is attached to one end ot the muscle moves, but the bone which is attached to other end does not move.A group of muscles producing an action is called agonist and opposing group of muscle are called antagonist, when one contracts the other relaxes.
Biceps brachii has two origins both are attached to scapula, the insertion is on the radius, when biceps brachii contract, the insertion is pulled towards the origin which results in the flexion of the forearm at the elbow, in this biceps brachii is the agonist, now for the forearm to go back (extension of forearm), the Triceps brachii has to contract, in this case the triceps trachii is the antagonist.
