Epicurus is a hedonist of his era and he totally believed that pleasure is the only thing that is good in itself and pain is the only thing that is bad in itself. Epicurus believed that hedonism was to avoid all the things from life which gives pain to us and according to me, that is the reason he opposed vulgar hedonism or getting more intimated in a relationship. He was not at all against the relationships, but he did not support them much to the intimate relationships or relationships which gives pain. He was an atomic materialist and his materialism led to a general attack on divine intervention and superstition.
Hedonism declares pleasure to be its sole intrinsic goal, also the concept that the absence of fear and pain leads to great pleasure and its advocacy of a simple life. At this point, I believe naturally, that every individual has their own definition of pain and happiness and always has different intensity to feel those, so we can’t say which hurts one also hurts another, or that which gives pleasures to someone might hurt someone else. So, we can't generalize this thing but it depends on individual thinking and what people believe as their pleasure.
