Although mitosis and meiosis share some similarities, they differ in several significant ways. In an essay of between 100-150 words, give one purpose of mitosis and one purpose of meiosis. Explain why these purposes are important

Expert Solution

Ans) Mitosis :

During the process of Mitosis, the division of nucleus take place and as a result two daughter cells are produced which are identical.

Purpose :

1. The main function of Mitosis is to repair the damaged cells and help it to grow.
2. In mitosis , the size of the organism increases.
3. It is an asexual mode of reproduction.
4. In this , two daughter cells are produced which are identical.

The purpose is necessary because if Mitosis does not occur the damaged cells would not be able to replace and as a result of which new cells will not form and hence , the life span of any organism reduces.

Meiosis :

It is a process in which nucleus divides two times and give rise to four gametes.

Purpose :

1. The main function of mieosis is to produce gametes.
2. It is sexual mode of reproduction.
3. In this , the number of chromosomes is halved than that of parent cell.

The purpose is necessary because if meiosis will not occur the gamete will also not form. Hence , fertilisation will not take place.
