Energy consumed in the US can be classified ascoming from one of three sources: fossil fuels, nuclear power, andrenewable energy. In 2014, the energy from these three sourceswas 80.3, 8.3, and 9.6 quadrillion BTU, respectively. In 2004, thecorresponding amounts were 85.8, 8.2, and 6.1. Write a descriptionof the changes from 2004 to 2014 expressed in these data. Illustrateyour summary with appropriate graphical summaries. Be sure todiscuss both the amounts of energy from each source as well as thepercents.
The following table summarises the energy consumption in BTUs across two years from various sources in US.
Table 1. Energy consumption of US
Source | 2004 | 2014 |
Fossil | 85.8 | 80.3 |
Nuclear | 8.2 | 8.3 |
Renewable | 6.1 | 9.6 |
Total | 100.1 | 98.2 |
It is obvious from the table above that there is a decrease in overall consumption of power from 2004 to 2014 to the tune of of 1.9 BTU. The consumption of power from Fossil and nuclear sources had decreased in 10 years and a maximum increase(3.5 BTU) in Renewable sources followed by a very marginal increase in Nuclear energy(0.1 BTU). In the table below, the figures give the energy consumption in percentage terms.
Table 2: Percentage of energy consumption in US.
Source | 2004 | 2014 |
Fossil | 85.71 | 81.77 |
Nuclear | 8.19 | 8.45 |
Renewable | 6.09 | 9.78 |
Total | 100.00 | 100.00 |
It is now eveident that across both the periods, the consumption of power was more than ~82% through Fossil fuels. Compared to 2004, the consumption in 2014, increased across Nuclear and Renewable energy sorces with a highest increase in Renewable energy sources. The decrease in energy through Fossil is because of increase in other sources.
The same facts are represented graphically below.
It can be seen that the source of energy is the maximum through Fossil in both the periods with an increse of Nuclear and Renewable sources in 2014. The renewable energy power is maximum in 2014.
