in Genbank blast, what does it mean when it says a sequance is predicted? what does the term positive refer too and why is the % positive sometimes higher then teh % identity?
The sequence is predicted means that it has been predicted to be an open reading frame and not that it has been sequenced.
Percentage positive is the similarity between two sequences.
And percentage identity relates to the extent to which the two sequences have same residues at the same position in an alignment.
So according to their definition it is clear that positives can be higher than identity as times as identity is a very stringent measure.
