Chapter 4 Lab:
For each organ system, describe a condition/illness/disease that impacts it directly. Take it a step further and describe a condition that impacts each system indirectly – meaning it’s origination is within one system, but the condition impacts a secondary system. Make sure you state how the condition impacts the system directly and indirectly. Note: You can use the table provided or write out a narrative. The table is there for your convenience, but is not required as a tool. (22 points)
For example, hypothyroidism directly impacts the thyroid, but indirectly impacts the integumentary system (dry skin is a symptom).

Condition Direct Impact |
Condition Indirect Impact |
Integumentary |
Eczema : skin becomes red, itchy, inflamed, and sometimes blisters appear. Mainly caused due to exposure to allergens,eg. pollen. |
Weakens the immune system, Respiratory ailments like shortness of breath. |
Skeletal |
Major Fracture of bones |
Bed sore develop due injuries to skin and underlying tissue as a result of prolonged period of inactivity or being bed ridden. (integument) |
Muscular |
Dystropy : muscle weakness and muscle loss | affects the central Nervous system. Lack of coordination, mobility, limited range of motion. (muscular) |
Nervous |
Ataxia : caused by damage to the central nervous system. | affects the muscular system, lack of coordination, sporadic eye movements.(muscular) |
Endocrine |
diabetes mellitus :increased blood glucose levels due to improper functioning of insulin hormone. |
Atherosclerosis : narrowing of arteries, increased risk of heart attack. (cardiovascular) |
Cardiovascular |
high blood pressure |
increased risk of kidney disorders. (renal) |
Lymphatic |
lymphoma : enlarged lymph nodes. | Anaemia: loss of haemoglobin , shortness of breath. ( cardiovascular ) |
Respiratory |
asthma | Atopic dermatitis: appearence of rashes, itchy skin. (integument) |
Digestive |
cholera | muscle cramps due to dehydration and imbalance of Na+ and K+ ions.(nervous) |
Urinary |
chronic kidney disease | Increased risk of cardio vascular ailments like high blood pressure, cholesterol and tendency of obesity. (cardiovascular) |
Reproductive |
polycystic ovarian syndrome : production of excessive testosterone in females which leads to irregular menstrual cycle and difficulties in getting pregnant. | increased appearence of acne and excessive facial hair growth (integument) |
