Answer : Metabolic syndrome is defined as a cluster of risk factors which include excess abdominal fat, hyperglycemia (high blood glucose), hypertension (high blood pressure), low serum HDL cholesterol levels, hypertriglyceridemia (high blood triglycerides).

Metabolic syndrome occurs when a person has three or more of the following measurements:

  • Excess abdominal fat : A waistline that measures at least 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.
  • Hyperglycemia : Elevated fasing blood sugar 100 mg/dL or higher.
  • Hypertension : Systolic blood pressure of 130 mm Hg or greater, or diastolic blood pressure of 85 mm Hg or greater.
  • Low serum HDL level :  Less than 40 mg/dL in men or less than 50 mg/dL in women.
  • Hypertriglyceridemia : 150 mg/dL  triglyceride in blood or greater.

Low serum LDL cholesterol levels and hyperkalemia and high blood calcium are not comes under the risk factor of metabolic syndrome.
