A potter is making a spherical vase on a potter’s wheel. The vase has a mass of 0.8 kg and a radius of 4.0 cm and the potter’s wheel has a mass of 20.0 kg and a radius of 20.0 cm. The vase is centered on the wheel. While working on the vase, the wheel and vase rotate at 1 revolution every four seconds. When finished with the vase, the potter slows the wheel (and vase) by applying a normal force at the edge of the wheel. If she brings the wheel to a complete stop in 30 s and the coefficient of friction between her hands and the wheel is 0.45, what is the magnitude of the normal force between each hand and the wheel.

Consider a bicycle wheel, radius ? with rim of mass ? and axle of mass ?. The masses of the wheel’s thin spokes are so small that we will neglect them. Initially, the wheel is resting on a horizontal surface, and you hold its axle, a hand on each side of the wheel, so that it doesn’t tip over. At time ? = 0? you exert a horizontal force of magnitude ? on the axle so that the wheel begins...

With axle and spokes of negligible mass and a thin rim, a certain bicycle wheel has a radius of 0.350 m and weighs 33.0 N; it can turn on its axle with negligible friction. A man holds the wheel above his head with the axle vertical while he stands on a turntable that is free to rotate without friction; the wheel rotates clockwise, as seen from above, with an angular speed of 66.0 rad/s, and the turntable is initially at...

A bicycle wheel has a diameter of 63.0 cm and a mass of 1.74 kg. Assume that the wheel is a hoop with all of the mass concentrated on the outside radius. The bicycle is placed on a stationary stand and a resistive force of 117 N is applied tangent to the rim of the tire.
