A new industrial oven has just been installed at the Piatt
Bakery. To develop experience regarding
the oven temperature, an inspector reads the temperature at four di
erent places inside the oven
each half hour.

8:00 A.M. 340 350 355 339
8:30 A.M. 344 342 338 338
9:00 A.M. 341 345 347 343

1. Determine the control limits for the mean temperature. Determine
the grand mean. Plot the
experience on a chart.
2. Interpret the chart. Does there seem to be a time when the
temperature is out of control?
3. Determine the control limits for the range. Plot the experience
on a chart.
4. Does there seem to be a time when there is too much variation in
the temperature?
5. Determine the CL, UCL, and LCL for the S-chart. Plot the chart
and interpret the result.
6. Determine the CL, UCL, and LCL for the control charts of the
median and the range. Plot
the charts and interpret the results.
7. If you have to decide which charts to use among the presented
charts, which you prefer?
Justify.
8. Assume normality distribution for the oven temperature and use
estimators of the mean and
standard deviation to determine the process capability by computing
the necessary indexes.
The lower and upper speci cations limits are 333.1 and 350.42,
respectively.
Interpret the results.
