NEURONS
Neuron is defined as the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. It is otherwise called nerve cells.
Neurons transmit the impulses from the area of stimulaton to the other areas(Conductivity)
Mechanism of conduction of Action potential in non myelinated Neuron.
At the site where nerve is stimulated ,an action potential is generated, that is,depolarization occurs.. This causes depolarization of the neighbouring arears and like this, depolarization travels throughout the nerve fiber. Depolarization is followed by repolarization.
Mechanism of conduction of action potential in myelinated nerve fiber (Saltatory conduction)
In unmyelinated nerve fibers, conduction of action potential is continuous and occur throughtout the length of nerve fiber. In myelinated nerve fibers, the impulses jumps from one node to another This is called a saltatory conduction.conduction of impulses thrugh a myelinated nerve fiber is about 50 times faster than through a nonmyelinated fiber. it is bacause the action potential jumps from one node to another node of Ranvier instead of travelling through thee entire nerve fiber.
