  • Many people with anxiety can also go through bouts of occasional depression. Symptoms occurring in depression and anxiety often occur in certain disorder.
  • Anxiety and depression have different clinical features but there are some overlap of symptoms.
  • For example : irritability, decreased concentration and impaired sleep are common in both anxiety and depression.
  • Depression:
    • It is past orientation.
    • We all have felt sad and blue at the time or another which lasts only for a few days which is not a problem.
    • When it comes comes to clinical depression it needs concentration and the symptoms are :
      • Feeling sad most of the time .
      • Low energy and feeling tired
      • Loss of interest in the activity
      • Sleeping difficulty
      • Hopeless feeling
      • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Anxiety:
    • It is a normal human behaviour which is related with the future.
    • Dangerous situation can trigger anxiety.
    • It is normal but when it becomes a problem it may effects the physical, emotional and behaviour.
    • Symptoms are:
      • Severe and may last longer
      • Out of hand situation
      • Can cause extreme behaviour i.e. avoidance
  • The term cognitive refers to the thought process and reflects about what we think , believe and perceive. Cognitive behaviour mostly focus on the thought and they are contributing to our current symptoms and difficulties.
  • They are corelated to one another.
  • It relates to poor discriminant validity of measures i.e. both emotional states are mostly related with negative affect, stressful life events, impaired cognitive process and they share a common biologic diasthesis.
