Beriberi is caused by not getting enough thiamine in your diet. Symptoms include swelling, tingling, or burning sensation in the hands and feet, confusion, difficulty breathing (from fluid in the lungs), and uncontrolled eye movements (called nystagmus).
It is a disease condition mainly occures due to the deficiency of vitamin B-1 it is also known as thiamine deficiency.It is a life threatening if it is not treated at the right time.
TYPES
1. Wet beriberi - affects the circulatory and cardiac system
2,Dry beriberi- it damages the nervous system and cause loss/difficulty in muscle strength later can lead to even paralysis
Main Functions of Vitamin B-1/ Thiamine
- it is essential for every tissues in human body to function accurately.It is a water-soluble nutrient that helps our body to turn the food into energy that required for our lifetime.
- ATP ( adenosine triphospate) is being created in our body by thiamine that helps to transport energy in our cells
SYMPTOMS
1. Lower leg swelling
2. Rapid heart rate
3. Short of breath
4.Physical activity can be hindered due to shortness of breath
5.Usually in dry beriberi a horizontal nystagmus is occured
TREATEMENT
This condition can be treated with the adiquate supply of thiamine in our diet.Doctors usuallu prescribe a thiamine shot or pill to treat it effectively.
