The Affordable Care Act ( ACA) is the sweeping overhaul of healthcare that President Barack Obama signed into law in March 2010. Formally referred to as the Patient protection and Affordable Care Act, but mostly simply called Obamacare, the bill provides a list of health care initiatives aimed at expanding health insurance services to millions of uninsured Americans.
The Act extended Medicaid access, established health insurance markets, and, regardless of pre-existing conditions, forbids insurance providers from refusing coverage (or costing more). It also helps children to stay on the health coverage of their parents up to the age of 266.
The individual mandate was a notable aspect of the Affordable Care Act, a clause forcing all Americans to have healthcare plans or face increasingly strict tax fines, either through an employer or from the ACA or another source. This mandate had the double function of providing healthcare to uninsured Americans and ensuring that health insurance premiums were funded by a fairly large pool of covered persons.
