APPLICATION OF CULTURAL DIMENSIONS IN NURSING PRACTICE

INTRODUCTION

​​​" Culture" can be defined as the way of life characterizing a particular society.The same way nursing care also consist of certain cultural dimensions inorder to provide a comprehensive care for the client .

CULTURAL DIMENSIONS IN NURSING PRACTICE

According to sociology and political researchers there are four basic cultural dimensions

  1. Power- distance (PDI): it measures the perception of satisfaction within a society
  2. Individualism versus collectivism ( IDV): it includes the strength of ties between the individual and a group.
  3. Masculinity versus Feminity( MAS):Male and female gender roles and competitive behaviour
  4. Uncertainty Avoidence (UAI): Ability of a society to tolerate ambiguity or uncertainty

Among these four dimensions above mentioned situation exihibits shared nursing governance which means we are dealing with Individualism versus Collectivism .

Inorder to provide comprehensive care to clients we need to adopt team approach rather than individualistic approach which enables certain advantages in the provision of care exampls like;

  • Inorder to achieve long-term goals it's higly effective
  • Team approach or collective approch reduces work stress among health workers.
  • It improves co-ordination and co-operation between health team members.
