In knee replacement procedure with an artificial prosthesis, as bioengineer what properties should you consider in selecting the materials for this application? What type of material fit the application?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. In knee replacement procedure ,(artificial replacement ) parts can be made of strong plastic ,metal or ceramic . All knee replacement ,partial or total will have parts made of a few different materials (metal and plastic) . In most cases ,each component is built from titanium ,cobalt - chromium alloys , or a titenium and cobalt mixed metal.

The metal femoralcompobent curves around the end of femur ( thigh bone) .

properties of choosen material:

1. Cobalt- chromium Alloys:this metal is biocompatible, tough ,durable ,and will not broken down inside body . It is used for femoral implant .

2. Titanium and titanium cobalt: it is used as frequently as cobalt- chromium. Titanium cobalt alloy biocompatible, will not corrode, nor change inside the body ,it is more elastic and favorable to natural bone surrounding the implant . Since this metal is softer ,make up tibial part replacement .

.3.Polythene : this is type of strong plastic found in the tibial patellar (kneecap) component and the plastic spacer. It allows the metal piece to glide smoothly throughout movement . This is metal - free.

Acrylic bone cement is sometimes used in hip and knee replacements to fix an artificial joint in place. The force required to break an acrylic bone cement bond was measured for n = 32 specimens under specified conditions, and the resulting mean and standard deviation were 302.89 Newtons and 41.47 Newtons, respectively. Construct an "approximate" 95% confidence interval for the true average breaking force of the acrylic bone cement under the specified conditions, using t-critical = 2 as the approximate...

Acrylic bone cement is sometimes used in hip and knee replacements to fix an artificial joint in place. The force required to break an acrylic bone cement bond was measured for seven specimens under specified conditions, and the resulting mean and standard deviation were 306.17 newtons and 41.92 newtons, respectively. Acrylic bone cement is sometimes used in hip and knee replacements to secure an artificial joint in place. The force required to break an acrylic bone cement bond was measured for eight specimens, and the resulting mean and standard deviation were 306.01 newtons and 41.92 newtons, respectively. Assuming that it is reasonable to believe that breaking force has a distribution that is approximately normal, use a 95% confidence interval to estimate the mean breaking force for acrylic bone cement. A medical researcher wants to construct a 99% confidence interval for the proportion of knee replacement surgeries that result in complications. An article in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery suggested that approximately 8% of such operations result in complications. Using this estimate, what sample size is needed so that the confidence interval will have a margin of error of 0.047 ? Write only an integer as your answer.
