Prevention of infection: Chemotherapy induces immunosuppression, so the patient is prone to get infection easily.The patient should maintain personal and environmental hygiene,avoid crowd and contact with infected patients. He/she should follow regular blood investigations( for neutropenia). Early diagnosis and treatment of any infections plays an important role as well.
Overcome the side effects: Side effects are the tiring part of chemotherapy.Pulmonory toxicity, renal toxicity, myelosuppression, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, taste changes, skin changes, alopecia, oral mucocitis are some of them.Ptient should be taught about the side effects and mangement, so that he /she can manage illness ang adapt coping stratergies.This may include use of antiemitics,avoid strong smelling foods, use of mild mouth wash, soft bristle brush, protect the scalp from sunlight, stress management, adequate rest.
Nutrition: Nutrition plays a vital role in patient undergoing chemotherapy. patient should be given with soft non irritating high protien high fiber high calorie diet.They should avoid raw foods( raw vegetables etc).Eating light food before chemotherapyand eating dry fruites after geting up in the morning may help to prevent nausea and vomiting.
