DEFINE THE MEANING OF THE FOLLOWING TERMS
Perfusion: Process of the passage of blood or lymph or fluid through the circulatory or lymphatic system through which the oxygenated blood is delivered into the tissues and organs of the body. And the deoxygenated blood returned to the heart through veins.
Pericardium: Pericardium is also known as a pericardial sac that is comprised of 2 layers a fibrous layer and a serous layer. The pericardium is a thin sac filled with pericardial fluid that surrounds the heart.
Peripheral vascular system: part of the cardiovascular system comprised of arteries and veins of the peripheral part of the body like within the arms, hands, legs, and feet.
PR interval: Time between the start of P wave to the onset of QRS complex. PR interval represents the time between the start of atrial depolarization and the beginning of ventricular depolarization. Normal PR interval ranges from 0.12 to 0.20 seconds in duration.
Preload: It is the amount of stretching by the ventricles at the end of the diastole. It is also called a left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP).
Pulmonary artery: Artery that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricles into the lungs. The deoxygenated blood passes through adjacent capillaries to alveoli and becomes oxygenated.
Pulmonary vein: Veins that carry pure oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
Pulmonic semilunar valve: Semilunar valves in the heart that is present between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. Pulmonic semilunar valves consist of three cusps.
Pulse pressure: Pulse pressure is considered as the difference between systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.
Purkinje fiber: Network of specialized fibers located in the inner ventricular walls of the heart. These specialized fibers encourage the conduction system of the heart to create synchronized contractions of its ventricles, which is very essential for maintaining consistent heart rhythm.
QRS complex: QRS complex comprised of Q wave, R wave, and S wave. QRS complex represents the ventricular depolarization. This is the main spike seen on the ECG line. Normal QRS complex ranges between 0.06–0.10s.
