2. Describe the biological and physiological aspects of the sexual response cycle as described by Masters and Johnson. Note: Many researchers and sexual health educators feel the response cycle is incomplete. As part of your response include your thoughts regarding whether the response cycle accurately represents what happens to the human system during sexual activity. Also comment on the reasons why many researchers and educators feel it is incomplete.

The sexual response cycle refers to the sequence of physical and emotional changes that occur as a person becomes sexually aroused and participates in sexually stimulating activities, including intercourse and masturbation.

# The four phases of the sexual response cycle describe by Masters and Johnson are excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.

Both men and women experience these phases, although the timing usually is different.

Several physiologic changes may occur during different stages of sexual activity.

1) Excitement :-

Heart rate quickens and breathing is accelerated.

Skin may become flushed .

Nipples become hardened or erect.

Blood flow to the genitals increases and labia minora (inner lips), and erection of the man’s penis. The woman’s breasts become fuller .

2) Plateau :-

Breathing, heart rate and blood pressure continue to increases , If stimulation continues, one moves into the plateau stage. This phase results increase in the sexual pleasure, both the sexes are involved to have sex,The responses may continue to intensify as the both sex becomes more sensitive.

3) Orgasm :-

This phase is the climax of the sexual response cycle. It is the shortest of the phases and generally lasts only a few seconds.Contractions may be felt in the sex organs.

Blood pressure, heart rate and breathing are at their highest rates, with a rapid intake of oxygen.

4) Resolution :-

During this phase, the body slowly returns to its normal level of functioning, and swelled and erect body parts return to their previous size and color. During the half hour or more after orgasm, the muscles relax, and all body organ return to their usual positions.
