You are a nurse caring for a 26-year-old male positive for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and recently diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Based on your knowledge of the pathophysiology of this disease process address the following:
ANSWERS:
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the sexually transmitted infection, where the virus enters into the body through skin to skin contact. HPV causes cancer either in genital regions and other areas of the body, and lasts for a life long time.
A. EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS:
HPV occurs through sexually transmitted infection, which is commonly seen in sexually interacted people. HPV occurs only in humans and spreads from direct skin to skin contact from an infected person to a healthy person. This infection is mostly seen in United states with anal sex performances. High risk cancers will occur like anal, cervical, genito urinary, penis, oropharyngeal cancers develop because of HPV. HPV can be prevented by vaccination but it cannot be cured once developed in the person.
B. 1. CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS RELATED TO DISEASE PROCESS:
As HPV is a sexually transmitted infection`and it influences the cultural areas. Mostly the virus spreads to women who participates in anal sex or having multiple partners eith HPV. There the prevalence rates of infection is very high and providing of vaccination to different culture grops is importand instead of racial, cultural, ethnic, socio economic status, race disparitities.
2. ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS RELATED TO DISEASE PROCESS:
As the vaccination for Human papilloma virus gives lifelong immunity at the same time it is cost effectiveness based on the vaccine coverages. As the human papilloma virus cannot be cured but can be prevented by giving vaccination, that vaccine cost varies from the durability, efficacy, and coverage areas. To traet the cancer developed patient the cost ranges from moderate to higher which cannot be affordable at a point of time to treat for the affected people. Therefore economic outcomes play a important part in the disease process of HPV.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS RELATED TO DISEASE PROCESS:
People with poor standard of living, smokers, HPV positive women in the family are at a high risk where they spread the infection to children through environmental factors. As a result the virus will spread through the environment and exhibit the symptoms of warts, dental caries in children, cancers of neck, throat, head, and genitals are seen.
C. NURSING INTERVENTIONS FOR HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS:
The nursing interventions for Human papilloma virus are as follows:
1. Screening of the patient by making effective diagnostic findings
2. Assesment for the presence of signs and symptoms
3. Identifying the high risk age groups
4. Providing vaccinationto prevent the spread of disease
5. Smear test to detect the cancer stages.
