Below is a list of examples that are typical of research conducted in behavioral science. For the following list of examples, identify the dependent variable (DV) and independent variable (IV). Also, please identify the level of measurement (e.g., nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) for each IV and DV.
A researcher tests for differences in levels of recall (on a scale of 0 [no recall at all] to 10 [recall all the answers] based on different types of distractions (auditory or visual distractions).
Independent Variable:
Level of Measurement (IV):
Dependent Variable:
Level of Measurement (DV):
Independent Variable: Type of Distraction (This is the variable that the researched manipulates to see how it affects the dependent variable)
Level of Measurement (IV): Nominal (because it is categorical)
Dependent Variable: Level of recall (This is the variable that is affected by the change in independent variable)
Level of Measurement (DV): Ordinal (because it is measured on an arbitrary scale with an order)
