Identify all the different types of bonding (ionic, covalent, or both) in the following compounds: Br(ClO4)2, ClO2, NaCl
Ionic Only
Covalent Only
Both
Solution :-
When the metal and non metals are present in the formula then they forms ionic bonds
when non metal and non metal elements forms the bond then they shape pair of electrons to form the bond therefore the bond is covalent bond. When the electronegativity difference is less than 0.5 then it is non polar covalent bond and when electronegativity difference is 0.5 to 1.7 then bond is polar covalent bond.
following is the types of bond which are present in each molecule
Br(ClO4)2 = Ionic bond and covalent bond (both)
ClO2 = covalent bond only
NaCl = Ionic bond only
