1. Write if the following compounds have ionic bonding and/or covalent bonding. Keep in mind that they could have both of them at the same time. Explain Why.

a) CH3OCH3

b) MgCO3

c) NH4Br

d) (CH3)3N

e) BrCN

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer – In this one we are given the compound and we need to write if the following compounds have ionic bonding and/or covalent bonding.

We know the ionic bonding present between the metal and nonmetal atoms. The covalent bonding is between the nonmetals.

a)CH3OCH3- In this one there are all nonmetals , so in this one only covalent bonding is present.

b) MgCO3 – In this one there is metal Mg and nonmetal CO32- so there is ionic bonding. There is bonding between the nonmetal like C and O, so there is covalent bonding. So in this one there are both bonding present.

c) NH4Br – In this one there are ammonium ion and bromide ion, so there is ionic bonding and in the ammonium there are covalent bonding also present, so there are both bonding present.

d)(CH3)3N – In this one all are nonmetal, so there is only covalent bonding is present.

e) BrCN - In this one all are nonmetal, so there is only covalent bonding is present.

Question 21 What is the fundamental difference between covalent and ionic bonding? In a covalent bond, the partners share a pair of electrons; in an ionic bond, one partner accepts electrons from the other. Covalent bonds form between atoms of the same element; ionic bonds form between atoms of different elements. Covalent bonding involves only the outermost electron shell; ionic bonding also involves the next electron shell inside the outermost shell. In covalent bonding, both partners end up with filled...
