2. For each compound, state whether its bonding is ionic, covalent, or a mixture of ionic and covalent, then draw a Lewis structure to show the bonding in the compound: Please explain why it is ionic, covalent or a mixture of ionic and covalent.
a) CH2Cl2 b) NaOCH3 c) HCO2Na
We obtain the ionic or covalent character by determining the electronegativity difference between the participation atoms. In general, a non-metal bond with non-metal is covalent while a non- metal bond with metal is ionic bond.
a) CH2Cl2
We see that all elements are non-metals and therefore form covalent bonds.
b) NaOCH3
We see that a metal Na is present. This metal will form an ionic bond with the oxygen while the remaining bonds will be covalent. It has a mixture of ionic and covalent bonds.
c)HCOONa
Just like in b), a mixture of ionic and covalent bonds.
