Organic chemists use many types of chromatography to separate, isolate, or identify molecules based on physical properties. Gas chromatography separates molecules based on which physical properties?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Gas chromatography separates molecules based on physical property known as "partition coefficient". Partion coefficient is the ratio of solubility of a substance in a mixture of two immiscible liquids. So in a gas chromatography the substance which has greater participation coefficient it will be more soluble with the stationary phase and as a result it will elute at last. The substance which is less soluble in the liquid used as stationary phase that will eluted first.

In gas chromatography the sample first converted into vapour and then it separated.
