Which of the following descriptions best matches the function of a dehydrogenase?

A. An enzyme that catalyzes the addition of phosphate groups to other molecules
B. An enzyme that catalyzes a change in the position of a specific chemical group within a
single molecule
C. An enzyme that catalyzes redox reactions
D. An enzyme that catalyzes the rearrangement of bonds within a single molecule

Solutions

Expert Solution

C. An enzyme that catalyze redox reaction.

D. That catalyses the rearrangement of bonds with in a single molecule.

Dehydrogenase are a group of oxidoreductases that catlyses reversible reaction. They oxidise a substrate by reducing an electron acceptor and release H+ or transfer of 2H+ to NAD+,NADH, FAD or FMN+. Gain of oxygen from water, substrate may loss proton and free electrons on substrate form double bonds.Water moleule provide hydroxide ion to the substrate, adding oxygen and releasing protons. They are not directly participating in phosphorlation reaction but indirectly through NAD+ and NADP+. Dehydrogenase reduce electron acceptors such as NAD+ and NADP+ which are used in catabolic pathways for the breakdown of energy molecule to produce ATP.

Pyruvate Dehydrogenase is a huge multi-enzyme complex in which substrates are channeled from one enzyme to the next. In fact, recent evidence suggests that many citric acid cycle enzymes may interact pass substrates along the pathway and that the components of the electron transport chain associate into an electron transfer super complex. What are the advantages of such an arrangement?

In the citric acid cycle, malate is oxidized to oxaloacetate by the enzyme malate dehydrogenase, which uses NAD+ as an electron acceptor. In cells, the ratio of [NAD+]/[NADH] is kept very high. Given the following standard reduction potentials, explain why it is so important for cells to maintain this ratio. Justify your answer with words, equations and diagrams. oxaloacetate + 2H+ + 2e- -> malate E°red= -0.166 V NAD+ + H+ + 2e- > NADH E°red= -0.320
