Describe the specific properties of the surface of the Moon, and how they got there. Be specific, using descriptions as though you were speaking to a friend who doesn't know anything about the subject.

Expert Solution

ANSWER- The specific properties of the surface of the moon are as follows-

The surface of the moon has two hemispheres with rather asymmetric properties;

The surface is divided into two types- lighter areas called the LUNAR HIGHLANDS and higher areas called the MARIA.The maria are lower in altitude than the highlands .The dark material filling the Maria is actually dark ,solidified lava from earlier periods of Lunar volcanism .

The surface has witnessed many large craters as a result of meteor impacts,usually more on the highlands.larger number of craters indicate older crusts.

The moon is covered with gently rolling layer of powdery soil with scattered rocks that is called the regolith.

the most common rock type of rock is igneous ,as there is no atmosphere and no water for breakdown.

If meteorites strike the surface of the moon "at random", the number of meteorite craters per unit area should be a Poisson random variable with parameter Lambda (expected number of craters per unit area). If N=10 units of area are examined and the total number of meteorite craters found is 8, would you accept H_0: lambda=0.5 with alpha=0.68, with the alternative H_1: lambda=1? Evaluate Beta for this test.
