Discuss the comparative advantages and disadvantages of using focus groups versus in-depth interviews.
Focus group refers to a group of 10 or less individuals.A group is usually asked to share their opinion and give comments and this is common in a situation where a new product is to be launched,or in health programs where each individual gives their views on the topic related. The advantages would be to understand the related issues as there will be many opinions, more ideas evolved, comparison easy for data collection in observation method. The disadvantages would be that at times there are too many opinions, people in the group may not share the same views, conflict is likely to arise. When dealing with sensitive topic it may be difficult to hold focus group discussions. The environment may not be suitable where the group is located and this may affect the behaviour of the participants. Moreover more cost is incurred in conducting such discussions .
In depth interview is a tool of qualitative research ,open ended and thorough guided interviews held with fewer people. It is useful to find interest in individual information that can be attained only through formal or informal conversation with an individual. The advantages are that much information can be collected through personal interviews.it is one to one atmosphere which provides confidentiality. The disadvantages are it may not be feasible in large health surveys where interviews cannot be conducted with each individual, generalization of results will not be possible as the sample size will be small.
