Mentoring in Nursing

Mentorship in Nursing is a process in which a more experienced and trained professional helps to guide, advice, counsel and provide continuing support that will help a less experienced nurse in their learning and development process. This method helps junior nurses acquire skills, knowledge and get motivated from experienced nurses or managers and develop helping relationship or nurturing process.

Benefits of Mentoring

Mentoring helps Increased confidence, higher self awareness encouraged and empowered in personal development, exposure to new ways of thinking, giving and receiving feedback, lower levels of anxiety,employee engagement and retention, job satisfaction and positive company culture.

Mentoring Relationships

Mentoring relationship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. It is a learning and development partnership between someone with vast experience and someone who wants to learn.

The mentor's role is to guide, to give advice, and to support the mentee. A mentor can help a person (mentee) improve his or her abilities and skills through observation, assessment, modeling, and by providing guidance. The benefits of a positive mentoring experience are rewarding both for the mentor and mentee. Mentoring program offered mentorship for nurses at health care centre and led to improved recruitment, retention, and an organizational culture of engagement. Mentoring provides an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a mentee in whatever workforce setting.

Barriers to Mentoring

(1) Mismatched expectations between mentor and mentee,

(2) Lack of available mentors in PHM,

(3) Lack of time/compensation for PHM mentors, and

(4) Geographic separation between mentor and mentee.
