Your patient is a 69-year-old male who was admitted to the medical unit from his cardiologist’s office for heart failure exacerbation.

  1. What medications do you anticipate the health care provider would prescribe while the patient is in the hospital and why?

Primary concerns for a heart failure patients may include -

1) Abnormal heart rhythm - Atrial fibrillation.

2) Heart valves problem - Blood is pumped through valves but when patient goes in heart failure condition then heart have to work harder and these valves can damage or can change in size.

3) Kidney damage or failure - kidneys removes waste products from body and required blood but when enough blood won't reach kidneys then they can get damaged or can lead to kidney failure

4) Liver problems - liver breaks down toxins for removal from body and when heart failure condition is there, then portal vein pressure builds and increases then it may scar the liver.

5) Lung problems - heart failure can lead to pulmonary odema.

6) Obesity

7) Hypertension

8) Diabetes

9) Coronary artery disease.

Heart failure may get worse over time if we don't treat it. Severe heart failure can be life threatening.

medications required for heart patients include -

Aspirine- Low dose aspirin has anti platelet aggregation property, so it is helpful in stroke patients.

sodium nitropruside is the choice of drug in heart failure patients.

Digioxin, Diuretics, Low sodium diet, Exercise, Stop smoking, Beta blockers, Angiotensin receptor blockers, Vasodialators can be given to heart failure patients.

Vasodialators are given because they cause Vasodialation so that work load on heart reduces.

Beta blockers help in reducing high blood pressure, high pulse rate etc

Diuretics reduces extra water and help in maintaining blood pressure

ACE inhibitors help in relaxing blood vessels, lowers BP and prevents diabetes related kidney damage.

Antianginal drugs - help in reducing chest pain or pressure caused by blockages.
