Ciprofloxacin
Injection
a. Comments and additional medication info
:
- Ciprofloxacin injection is an
antimicrobial agent given as an intravenous (IV) administration. It
is used to treat bacterial infections.
- The medication should not be used for
any disorder other than that for which it is prescribed.
- Do not give this injection to other
people, even if they are showing the same symptoms.
- Patients should report any signs of
adverse reactions to the physician.
- Ciprofloxacin should not be given to
patients with myasthenia gravis, as it may worsen the
condition.
b. The therapeutic effect of the
medication:
- Urinary
Tract Infections
- Lower
Respiratory Tract Infections
- Chronic
Bronchitis
- Skin Infections
- Bone and Joint Infections
- Acute Sinusitis
- Complicated Abdominal Infection
- Bacterial Prostatitis.
c. The action of the
medication:
Ciprofloxacin is bactericidal
antibiotic belonging to the class of Fluroquinolones. The
inhibition of the enzymes topoisomerase II and topoisomerase IV,
further inhibits the bacterial DNA replication, transcription,
repair, and recombination. The inhibition, thereby enables
Ciprofloxacin to act as a bactericidal.
d. Side
effect or Adverse reactions of the medication:
Ciprofloxacin can cause serious side effects, which
include
- Tendinitis (Swelling or rupture of
the tendons)
- Worsening of Myasthenia Gravis
(muscle weakness)
- Peripheral Neuropathy (Nerve damage
and or changes in sensation)
- Central Nervous System disorders such
as Seizures, tremors, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, paranoia
and confusion.
- Phototoxicity or
Photosensitivity
e. The recommended dose
ranges:
Pediatric
dose - 6mg/kg to 10mg/kg every 8 to 12 hrs.
Adult
dose – 200 - 400mg every 18 – 24 hrs.
f. Contraindication of the medication
:
- Hypersensitivity –
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin
or any other drug of quinolone class of antibiotic.
- Tizanidine – Administration with
Tizanidine is contraindicated.
g. Life-threatening
considerations:
- Hepatotoxicity – cases of
hepatotoxicity including hepatic necrosis and life threatening
hepatic failure has been reported with the use of Ciprofloxacin
IV.
- Hypersensitivity Reactions-
Serious and fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been reported
with the first dose of Ciprofloxacin.
- Concurrent administration of Ciprofloxacin IV
accompanied by Theophylline have been reported to show serious and
fatal reactions.
h. Nursing intervention
- To
perform culture and sensitivity test before starting the
therapy.
- Continuation of the medication for 2 days after
the infection is cleared.
- Monitoring clinical response. If there is no
improvement or there is a relapse occurring, repeat culture and
sensitivity test.
- Encouraging the patient to complete the full
course of the antibiotic therapy.
