Design your own assignment in which you implement five acts of kindness (pro-social behavior). Use your discretion, common sense, and modesty at all times. Do not put yourself in an environment of potential danger or harm to yourself.
Write a paper of 500-750 words in which you describe what you did, how, where, to whom, and what reactions you perceived from others and yourself.
Pro-social behaviour consists of helping, sharing, donating, co-operating and volunteering. This can be exhibited individually or as a whole. In my experience, I had to exhibit all the five characteristics. It was during my summer holidays and I planned to visit my uncle's house that was three hundred kilometers away from my college. I chose to travel by bus at night. I boarded the bus and it was a Saturday. The bus was full and at around 09.00 pm the bus started to its destination. The lights were turned off at 10.00 pm to allow everyone to sleep. I was very tired and soon I fell asleep. The travel was smooth until our driver applied a sudden break and everyone woke-up to find that the bus hit a motorcyclist and he lay there in a pool of blood, unconscious. The driver was in a shock and everyone started talking among themselves. Some people even tried to call the ambulance.
It took nearly 20 minutes for the ambulance to pick up the person and the motorcyclist had already lost enough blood. I dropped the idea of going to my uncle's house and decided to follow the motorcyclist to the hospital. The paramedics took him to the nearest hospital. The doctors ran back and forth and checked whether they had enough O positive blood. Unfortunately, one more unit was needed and fortunately, my blood group was O positive.
I stayed there in the hospital till morning. At 10 am in the morning, I saw the motorcyclist who came back to consciousness. The doctor introduced me to the motorcyclist and told that I donated blood which saved him. Tears rolled down from his eyes in gratitude. That made me identify my purpose in life, starting a blood donation app and donating blood.
When I got back to the college, I shared that incident to all my friends and my idea of starting an app for donating blood. We quickly started to develop the app as we were all students of information technology. We named the app as 'Red Life' and started to build a data base with the details of people and their blood groups. The app had 25 volunteer administrators from our friends circle, so adding the necessary details was very quick. We shared our app information to the blood banks and hospitals and shared the information about the app through social networking sites. People also contacted us directly to get information on the availability of blood and donors.
We also organised blood donation camps in different colleges and city centres and the response was huge. Our friends volunteered to work in the hospitals and blood banks during the evenings and early mornings. So far, we have collected nearly 25, 000 units of blood and worked for nearly 575 hours in various organisations.
People started calling our group 'Modern Crusaders' who fight for a good cause and we adopted the same name for our service organisation. When we go for our usual volunteering service in the hospitals, the doctors take us and introduce us to the patients who received blood from our end. The gratitude expressed in their faces, brings a unique feel inn my hearts which cannot be described in words but the feel is a mix of happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment.
