Discussion "The Women's Kingdom"
Please watch "The Women's Kingdom" which is a video about a matrilineal group in China and this video will give you an insight into a very different marriage pattern that most students are familiar with. After you have watched the video, research and post on a marriage pattern of a particular culture that is different from your own culture's or the Mosuo culture and describe that marriage pattern. Include the location (where they live and also the name of the peoples), what type of marriage pattern they practice and all other relevant information on the particular culture as it relates to marriage. THANKS

In her documentary film, 'The women's kingdom' Xiaomi Zhou brings out the life of women in Mosuo (Southwest China), one of the biggest matriarchal societies in the world. This region has abvery beautiful landscape with mountains, lakes, trees etc.
In Mosuo tribe there is no egal marriage but only what they call a 'walking marriage'. In this set up, they don't marry or live with any man but they have only physical relationship if they like the man to bear children. The decision of physical relationship is decided by the woman. The girls won't be allowed to wear skirts until they turn 13 and then they can date men and give birth to children. Kids are taken care by the women together and in Mosuo community, uncles play the father's role. They bring up their sister's children. The women in the meantime can have any number of relationship in her life. This makes sure that they enjoy Ultimate freedom.
They like to sing and dance. During the 1990s when the region was first spotted for tourism, Mosuo people entertained the tourists with their singing and dancing skills and shared the money among themselves as they live as one family. Almost everyone in Mosuo has either a hotel or restaurant, so the women are financially independent. They also involve in weaving, farming etc. Men take the harder jobs while women choose to do the household works and help men with the harder tasks.
Although, people in this region accept that tourism will improve their standard of life, they don't like tourists spoiling the nature and taking advantage of their culture. Most of the men tourists come to Mosuo to look for opportunities for a one night stand. Some even try the marriage temptation but it ended up in failure. Mosuo people don't like the Han people who live in mainland China. They don't like to live in cities where people live as if they are in jail as described by a Mosuo woman.
