The maintenance of arms has been crucial in state building and maintenance since the formation of nations. There has been a gradual shift over time in the primary function of arms from offensive to defensive. However, the spending of arms is at an all time high even though we are in a period of (relative) peace. This is likely to originate from the influence the Military Industrial Complex has on national and international politics.

The significance of arms is quite important in maintaining the status of the nation and the development of any country. Earlier the arms were used for the offensive purposes in order to invade others, to secure more resources but as the things get settled down in mankind, the application of arms has been converted more into a defensive one. This inherently signifies that as the arms are not being used for defensive purposes, there should be a decline in the funds spent on arms but this is completely opposite i.e. now despite having a peaceful world, countries are having a race of acquiring greater quantity and technologically sophisticated arms with each other and this is mainly resulted due to the influence of Military Industrial Complex on both national and international politics.
This article mainly throws light on how the application of the arms have been changed over the period of time from offensive purposes to defensive purposes and despite having a peaceful world, the countries are spending a greater amount of funds in acquiring more and more arms rather than investing in human capital and other means of HRD indexes.
