spend some time observing the children in your care setting. what do you notice about the cues that individual children demonstrate ?what do they mean?
The following are the cues that individual children demonstrated after observing the children in care setting:
1. Tapping hands on the floor rapidly: This was observed in a toddler when I was looking for the needs of other children. Form the cue I went to the child and he did not want food or have any discomfort but wanted my attension and by tapping he made sure that I was attentive to him.
2. Drawing pictures of the same house: A 5 year old child used to draw picture of houses and nothing else and coloured the house in the same way always. When showing the picture to parents they described it was same as their house and from the cue we can say that the child was missing being home and arounf his family and it was his way of showing that he missed them.
3. Crying over for a long time: A girl in the child care seeting was crying over for a long time and caregivers gave her food, toys, showed colour but she continued to cry. When another girl of the same age was ner her playing and she was taken to play along she stopped crying and indulged in play. From her crying cue I was able to understand that the child needed a companion to play with of the same age in playful activities.
4. Removing clothes: A child removed his clothes and started crying even after we redressed him and showed many toys. A experienced caregiver then took the child to toilet and it turn out he removing clothes was a cue for him to be taken to toilet and he did not fidget with the clothes that day again.
So, above mentioned are some examples of the cues that I observed and learn from individual children demonstrated after observing the children in care setting.
