1.Workaround is a temporary intevention to a specific probelm or a momentary solution for any issues related to patient care in Nursing. It do not assure patient safety and not based on an evidence based pracice.
According to my personal experience ,in the past ,for steam inahalation used a POT METHOD in health care facilities .After the introduction of electric steam inhaler some of the instituitions followed the old practice. For this procedure the nurse need to boil the water then poured it in to a clay or ceramic pot. The body of the pot is covered with special clothing. The mouth of the pot is covered and an opening made at the middle to allow the steam to come out. This is a home remedy .But in the health care facility it has many risk factors to mention.(especially in pediatric section).
Chances to get burns especially to pediatric patients and the provider also in arisk for burn.
Safety measures are very less or nothing for the patient and the health care provider.
It consumes more time and energy.
Need assistance for pediatric cases.(One staff cannot perform it alone).
Many occassions it wasn't effective also. Because it is very hard to cover a pediatric patient to administer a well focussed steam inhalation. The boiled water didnot remain hot for along time also. The nurses are not satisfed also. Unfortunately some of the health care providers made mistkes with this procedure and patient had a hystory of burn and the nurse got punished. It was really a workaround practice .
But now with the use of electric steam inhaler all above mentioned issues are almost solved.
The important thing is need to be considered the safety issues strictly.
