Dependence
- Physical dependence: When the body cannot function without
certain amount of alcohol, is called physical dependence on
alcohol. Alcohol effects certain neurotransmitters of the
brain,this makes brain accustomed to alcohol and in the prolonged
use of alcohol ,it becomes difficult for brain to function without
the presence of certain amount of alcohol,it interferes with the
brains capacity to send signals for proper functioning of the body
while carrying out a task.
- Psychological dependence: Alcoholics find it hard to face the
difficult circumstances of life without alcohol.They consume
alcohol to evade life's tension and difficulties. Also alcoholism
leads them to depression and anxiety due to the lowered mental
capacities.
Long Term problems.
- Diminishing mental capacities in alcoholics.
- Lever cirrhosis- a condition in which permanent damage to liver
or part of it occurs due prolonged alcohol alcoholism
- Pancreatitis- a life threatening damage to pancreas occurs due
to alcoholism.
- Cardiovascular disease occur due to alcoholism.
- Many type of cancers are also associated with alcoholism.
- Disturbed family and personal life.
- Decreased work efficiency at work place.
Therapy
The most widely used therapy for alcoholism is Cognitive
behavioral therapy.This therapy has three stages.
Functional analysis- helping the person to identify past and the
problems associated with alcoholism.
Coping skill strategies: helping the person to develop coping
strategies for their alcoholism.
Relapse prevention: developing strategies to prevent the relapse
of alcoholism.
