John Wennberg and colleagues have identified wide variations in the utilization rates for particular services that do not seem to be justified based on medical or patient preferences. What are some ways to reduce these variations?
John wennberg is a professor in dartmouth institute where he started his research in 1967 supported by the london president where he compared medical treatments in tiny, similar vermont towns. To his surprise,he discovered that there were dramaticaly different surgery rates, despite the towns demographic homogeneity.Though wennberg's findings were initially ignored by medical publications.
And after much struggles he wennberg founded the dartmouth institute for health policy and clinical practice recruiting an international body of scholars and health care researchers to study this new field.
Where his research includes serving as a consultant to the maine lung cancer prevention and screening maine's large population of older smokers and low- income, rural people contributes to its very high lung cancer mortality rate.
Lung cancer screening could help to reduce this mortality. However the significant variation exists in lung cancer screening practice, as well as in the provision of necessary counseling services. The components of Maine LungCAPs that are related to improving patient care pathways and educating providers could be a significant step toward improving early detection and treatment services for vulnerable, rural, underserved patient populations in Maine
And the variation can be reduced in the way that the patient are to be treated and there should be a awareness between them like what are all the effect that we get ,when we are affect to lung cancer, and the counselling must be give to those people and to help them to come across that situation and medicines for the patient should be available at a minimum cost and the preference for the medicine must be some what low where as they would be able to consume it ,and the service amount for those patient should be charged less, while smoking it affects not only the smoker and the whole surrounding wil be affected so the people over there must be aware of it and these are some variation.
