Viruses are DNA or RNA genetic material with protoen coat. They survive on the host cell.Viruses are fast multiplying, contagoius and epidemic.Same species virus shows different morphology and genetic make up based on area, climate, hosts etc. They have beneficial role also.Viruses protects hosts from other infection, transfer of gene between species, and insert new genes to cells.Viruses multiply inside the host cell leads to defective immune response and cell damage.Incubation period - Time between infection in host and emergence of symptom.Virus and bacterial symptoms are some times alike.Viral transmission occurs through touch, air, respiratory droplets, contaminated food, needles and sexual contact.
Viral infection of the skin include Herpes, Chicken pox by Varicella zooster, Molluscum contagiosum etc. Most common respiratory viruses include Rhino virus - common cold, Infleunza virus,Hepatitis, Noro virus illness to people in ships,Rotavirus in babies which are food borne.Sexually transmitted viral infection involve HIV, Hepatitis B, Pappiloma Virus, Herpes by herpes simplex virus.Least common infections are viral meningitis by entero virus,West Nile disease spread through mosquitoes and Epstien barr virus spread through saliva.Zoonatic viruses which are spred through close contact with animals include Avian flue,Brucellosis,Hanta viral infection,Rabies, Yellow fever,Covid 19 , Zika viral infection etc. Mutation in DNA by virus leads to cancer such as nasopharyngeal cancer, Hodkins lymphoma and stomach cancer by Epstien barr virus. Hepatitis virus leads to liver cancer, HIV - cerevical cancer, lymphoma and Kaposi sarcoma.
Vaccines are developed for viral infections such as measles, rabies, polio, rubella, chicken pox etc and the disese can be eradicated. Antibotics are developed to prevent severity of viral infection. Proper protection, hygeine, prevention of mosquito and ticks bites, preventing rodent infestation by keeping food properly, proper awareness about the severity of infection are the measures to control viiral infection.Advanced research is undergoing world wide in the gene level and vaccine development to discover the medicine for epidemic viral infections.
