Problem 1

a) What are characteristics of Mollusca that distinguish it from other phyla? (Echinodermata, Arthropoda, Crustaceans and Chordata)

b) Describe adaptations in the circulatory and neurosensory systems of cephalopods that are particularly valuable for actively swimming, predaceous animals.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • The most general characteristic of molluscs is they are unsegmented and bilaterally symmetrical with distinct head, muscular foot and visceral. The dorsal part of its body wall is a mantle that secretes calcareous shells. The mouth contains a file-like rasping organ for feeding called radula. This makes  Mollusca unique from other phyla.
  • Adaptations in the circulatroy system :In order to increase the pressure of the blood, closed system in cephalopods have accessory or brachial hearts at the base of its each gill .This allow them to circulate enough water for high oxygen requirements. It is very valuable for actively swimming ,predaceous animals to get enough oxygen in their muscles.
Adaptations in the neurosensory system: Cephalopods brain has giant nerve fiers that initiates maximal contraction in the mantle muscles for quick escape. Its eyes are highly complex and have anexcellent eye sight.
