Currently, there is a large shortage of staff in many health care positions. Sometimes for nursing shortages, health care organizations hire travel and temporary nurses. Is something like this possible for other health care and allied health staff positions, or is there just such as shortage throughout the US and world in most of these positions that hiring temporary employees is just not feasible?
In the past, healthcare facilities used temporary staff only on an as-needed or limited basis to cover leaves of regular or permanent staff. But now, healthcare providers tend to hire more contingent labor. Today, temporary jobs for nurses, physicians, allied professionals and interim healthcare leaders are increasing for the successful running of many hospitals and other healthcare organizations.
Due to covid 19 pandemic situation Increasing shortages of healthcare professional is causing staffing problems throughout the health care industry. The resulting long hours and overwork can lead to increased medical errors, eroded staff morale, reduced patient satisfaction and outcomes, and eventually higher costs. Temporary staffing can be a better solution. There should be some system to get the newly hired staff to be familiar within the system and work.
It is reported that Temporary staff members working in a hospital’s fast-paced emergency department are twice as likely as permanent employees to be involved in medication errors that harm patients. The temp strategy in hospital staffing may be exacting a price in patient harm and that temp staff’s unfamiliarity with the practices and systems of a new hospital could be more costly in the long run in terms of patient safety.
