Types of vaginal infections
Vaginal infections are classified into
A) Vaginitis
B) Candidial vaginitis
C) Vaginosis
A) It is based on pathogenes causing it, it causes infection of vaginal epithelium
1.gonococcal vaginitis
2.trichomonal vaginitis or Tichomoniasis
3.monilial vaginitis or monialisis
4.chlamydial vaginitis
5.bacterial vaginosis
Except Bacterial vaginosis the others are sexually transmitted disease
B) it is not a sexually transmitted infection.
Commonly seen when there is an increase in content of glycogen in vaginal mucosa
Associated with factors altering the immune response like pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, on steroid medicines, poor personal hygiene
C) also known as non specific vaginitis or gardnerella vaginalis or anaerobic vaginitis
It occurs due to alteration in the normal vaginal flora
There is decrease in the lactobacilli in the vaginal discharge and hundred fold increase of anaerobic bacteria.
