Research the Internet for information about different types of infections and how they are classified by the CDC. Then chose a topic that relates to readmission rates, infection rates, or related rates. Investigate any trends or patterns in your chosen topic. You must identify the rate(s) that you have chosen and provide supporting details for any trends or patterns that you have determined.
Infection:
Infection is the lodgement and multiplication of infectious diseases in the host body .
Topic : Healthcare Associated infections
Trends or patterns in HAI ( Health care associated infections ) :
Healthcare Associated infections are the infections that the patient acquires while receiving the treatment different medical and surgical conditions. The term previously was known as Nosocomial infection, as the term referred to the infections acquired during the hospital stay , especially Acute care hospitals. This was also called as Hospital Acquired infections.
The HAI or HCAI are mostly preventable infections and the commonly found Health care Associated infections are CAUTI ( Catheter Associated Urinary Tract infections) and CLABSI (Central line associated blood stream infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) is a Federal Health agency that committed to reduce the rate of HAI in the nation by promoting quality , safety and value in health care delivery , there by protect the Healthcare personnel and patients from adverse health events.
Reports on trends , patterns and rates of HAI by CDC:
According to ' National and State Health care Associated infections Progress Report' by CDC, that identified the occurance of HAI across four health care settings such as Acute care hospitals , Long-term acute care hospitals, Inpatient Rehabilitation facilities and Critical access hospital , the HAI is the comon cause of readmissions in patients to the Emergency department and the long duration of Hospital stay. The commonly found HAIs are :
* Catheter Associated Urinary Tract infections ( CAUTI)
* Central line Associated Blood stream infections ( CLABSI)
* Surgical site infections ( SSIs)
* Ventilator Associated Events ( VAE)
* Clostridium Difficile ( C. difficile events )
* Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus ( MRSA)
According to CDC report , there are 1.7million of HAI reports across the nation each year and the death associated with it accounts for 99, 000 deaths. Among these HAIs , Urinary tract infections are accountable for 32 % HAI. All the four types of Health care setting, 1 out of 25 patients are getting HAI .
Readmissions rate due to HAI is 3% in U.S and infection rate associated with CLABSI is 250, 000 cases anually . VAE recorded as 2 to 11.7 % in 1000 ventilator days. MRSA incidence are getting lower each year in America.
