S7.11 The three-station work cell illustrated in Figure S7.7, has a product that must go through one of the two machines at station 1 (they are parallel) before proceeding to station 2. Station 1 Machine A Capacity: 20 units/hr Station 1 Machine B Capacity: 20 units/hr Station 2 Capacity: 12 units/hr Station 3 Capacity: 6 units/hr a)The bottleneck time of the system is___minutes per unit (enter your response as a whole number). b) what is the bottleneck station of this work cell? c) what is the throughput time? d) if the firm operates 10 hrs per day, 5 days per week, what is the weekly capacity of this work cell?
Output of station 1 = 2 x 20 units per hour= 40 units /hr
Output of station 2 = 12 units /hr
Output of station 3 = 6 units /hr
Bottleneck is station 3 with an output of 6 per hour.
Bottleneck time in Minutes per unit = 60/6 =10 minutes per unit
Bottleneck is station 3.
Throughput time = 60/20+60/12+60/6 = 18 minutes
Weekly capacity = 10x5x6 = 300 per week.
