The physician orders Lanoxin 0.25 mg IV daily. In the patient’s medication drawer is: Lanoxin 0.5 mg/2 ml. How many ml do you give?
USE THE BELOW FORMULA
Amount required=( Dose ordered x Total amount in ampule ) / Dose in ampule
Dose ordered = 0.25 mg
Total amount in ampule = 2 mL
Dose in ampule = 0.5 mg
substitute in the above formula
Amount required = (0.25 x 2 ) / 0.5 = 0.5 / 0.5 = 1 mL
So 1 mL of drug is required for ordered dose.
In simple terms,
0.5 mg = 2 mL
0.25 mg = X mL
Find X
X x 0.5 = 2 x 0.25 = 0.5
X = 0.5 / 0.5 = 1 mL
