why does patient undergone hemiarthroplasty developed abdominal distension ?
Hemiarthroplasty is a surgical procedure that involves replacing half of the hip joint. Hemi means "half" and arthroplasty refers to "join replacement ". A hemiathroplasty is generally used to treat a fractured hip. A patient undergone hemiarthroplasty can develop abdominal distention.
A patient undergone hemiarthroplasty can develop acute pseudo - obstruction of the colon ( ogilvie syndrome) and it can result in abdominal distention.
Abdominal distention in patients following hemiarthroplasty is mainly due to the development of acute pseudo obstruction of the colon , a condition which results in massive dilatation of the colon . The most common presenting symptom was abdominal distention which lasts for one to eleven days. Ogilvie syndrome is a clinical entity characterized by severe colonic distention ( adult megacolon) in the absence of mechanical obstruction.it can result in abdominal ischemia and perforation if left untreated.orthopedic surgery such as hip replacemet in the most common etiology for acute pseudo obstruction of colon.
In short ,patients undergone hemiarthroplasty can develops abdominal distention and the main reason behind is that the development of acute pseudo obstruction of colon.
