Should we keep the electoral college or go to straight popular vote? Why?
The Founding Fathers enshrined the Electoral College in the Constitution of United States as they thought it to the best way to choose the president. The usage of electors instead of the popular vote was intended to safeguard against uneducated or uninformed voters by putting the final decision in the hands of electors most likely to possess the information which is required to make the best decision; to prevent states with higher populations from having undue influence thus preserving the voice of states with lower populations and more rural areas; and making compromise between electing the president by popular vote and allowing Congress choose the president.
However in today's scenario updated technology allows voters to get required information to make informed decisions in a manner that could not have been foreseen by the Founding Fathers. No longer should the dissenting opinions of people be silenced; and no longer should the Electoral College speak on behalf of the citizens of the United States. It leaves room for error, provides few states too much power, and has issues with the voting system, thus in my opinion in today's modern era electoral should be abolished and we should go for straight popular vote
