A patient is ordered for 800mL NSS to infuse over 4 hours. 1 hour into the infusion only 50 mL have infused. Recalculate the infusion rate in mL/hr to complete infusion in the prescribed time.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Prescribed amount = 800ml

Time = 4 hours

To calculate ml/hr, use the formula

Infusion rate in ml/ hr = Prescribe volume in ml / time in hour

Substitute the given values to the formula

Infusion rate = 800 ml/ 4 hrs

= 200 ml / hr

Hence 200 ml/hr should be infused to complete the Prescribed volume in given time period.

Already 50 ml is use for 1 hr

Prescribe volume = 800 - 50 = 750 ml

Time = 4- 1 = 3 hrs

Now 750 ml and 3 hrs are remain.

Use the above same formula and calculate again

ml / hr = 750/3

= 250 ml/ hr

Now if 250 ml/ hr have to administer to complete on time.
