the doctor orders 1000mL D10W to infuse at 100 mL/hr. The nurse starts the IV at 2030. At 2200, the IV rate is increased to 125 mL/ hr per doctor's orders. Starting with the amount of IV of IV fluid left at 2200, calculate the new infusion time and the completion time of the IV
When the total fluid volume(mL) to infuse and infusion rate(mL/hr) are known, the formula is:-
Infusion time = Total volume ordered in mL / infusion rate (mL/hr)
The completion time for IV infusions is determined by adding the calculated infusion time to the start time (in hours and minutes).
Here,
Initial volume ordered is 1000mL and infusion rate is 100mL/hr. Hence, Infusion time is 1000/100 = 10hr.
But the IV was started at 2030 and at 2200 rate is increased. That is, the time after which the rate is increased is 1½hr. Thus by 2200 amount already infused is (1000/10) × 1½ hr = 150mL.
Thus, from 2200 the volume to be infused is (1000-150)= 850mL. and the infusion rate is 125mL/hr.
Hence, Infusion time = 850/125 = 6.8hr = 6hr 48min.
Completion time = 2200+0648 = 2848 (2848-2400 = 0448)
