Medical malpractice reform, also known as tort reform, includes strategies to limit medical malpractice costs, deter medical errors and ensure that the patients who are injured by medical negligence are fairly compensated.

Types of Reforms

The debate over medical malpractice reform typically takes place between two different groups are people :patient advocates and physician organisations. The former support the current system as a way to ensure that injured patients receive justice and physicians perform to established standards.

The medical malpractice reforms commonly >proposed include the following

1.paying out awards over time rather than in one lump sum.

2.creating barriers to filing malpractice claims to reduce the number of lswsuits

3.Imposing award caps on non economic damage.

Noneconomic damages are those that do not have a precise value. Award caps which limit doctors liability are the most common types of attempted reforms .

Malpractice may even affect the cost of health care Rising premiums may cause doctors to move to states with more manageble costs, which in turn will greatly influence patient access to the best doctors .Access to health care may grow increasingly limited in areas where premium are especially high.
